Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? (Even most Hallmark products are made in China.) Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificate from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. (Come see Designs by Anna at the Shawnee North Holiday Bazaar on November 18 & 19 or at the Lawrence Bizarre Bazaar on November 25 & 26!)

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. (My son, Zachary, has a gig at the Classic Bean on December 9th-come support him!)

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. Put it on Facebook, Twitter. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

Custom Fabric labels and tags-That Was EASY!

I've long wondered just how I might make fabric labels to attach to the products I sell as designs by anna but everything I found was a bust...until I someone suggested creating my own fabric via Spoonflower.com, and, well, here you go:

First step is to design your image, and play with the sizing at spoonflower.com until you get as many on a single yard as you can. I used a couple images from my own work and added the text on top of the pics.

When your fabric arrives in the mail from spoonflower.com, SQUEE and then fuse it to muslin or another basic color fabric with your trusty iron.

...and VOILA! Cut out your tags and labels with pinking shears and you are ready to rock the custom labels! I netted over 300 from a single yard of fabric ordered for about $22, or less than $ .07 for each label. NOT BAD!

Fall begins...school back in session

Time to get moving in production mode, get items ready to sell at the assorted bazaars and shows I do each year. And I'm looking for ideas of little fun things that you might be drawn to for yourself or gifts. What kinds of things are on your gift lists? What would you pick up "just because"?

GenCon, the best 4 days in Gaming, er, FELTING!!

In August every year, Indianapolis is home to several thousands of travelers, all searching for the next fun game to play whether that be board games, card games, video games, or role playing games of all sorts. This annual pilgrimage is known as GenCon, the best 4 days of Gaming in the world.

Many of these gamers are joined by significant others, families, friends who can drive, etc. and a few of those souls find themselves stranded at a convention of gamers with nothing to do but watch their gamers have a great time. That's where people like me come into the picture. We are the SPA Event Teachers: people teach their own passions to others who would like to do something other than game, like scrapbooking, jewelry making, and, yes, felting.

I taught three classes called "FELT This! Needle Felt Your Own Creature", and I was amazed by the creations of my students:

Summer Adventures-Upcycled Wardrobe

This past week was an amazing experience, and has cemented my resolve to continue to hone my skills at felting, and my ability to teach creativity to young and old alike. When you see someone ask you "Can I do this?" and then show them how to do what they've imagined, it is truly one of the greatest feelings ever!

So, I used to host a monthly craft night at my church, and though it fell by the wayside, I must admit, I miss getting together with fellow crafty broads and broadettes (the "girls" of all ages) to create beauty. And, since spring break begins for me the instant I log out today (shhhh! I'm still @ work), I've invited a few of my friends and their daughters to cram into Chez Walker on Thursday from 10am to 2pm to be CREATIVE!

I am providing all materials for a couple of projects and ask that my attendees bring the following: scissors (you can never have too many of them around when you're being creative), glue (stick, tacky, dots...whatever binds!), and a snack to share with your fellow attendees. I'll have lots of stuff to drink (no, again, not that kind of party) and a couple of projects ready for your special touch!

If you need directions, you know my number!!

Fibery Goodness, oh my!

I took last night as an opportunity to sort and organize my fiber stash in preparation for some felting fun to come in the next several days, and few weeks.

I have managed to collect enough fiber to completely cover the top of my queen size bed about a foot deep all around-and that's only the fibers, not any of the hand spun yarns, and common yarns that I use to embellish. I have a full tote now of alpaca and other specialty fibers!!

And, when I arrived at school this morning, I discovered half a dozen mason jars-which will come in handy for some dyeing experiments I plan in the very near future (I have WAYYYYY too much white fiber, need some funky colors!) Add those jars to the ones I already have at home, and I can easily have a dozen different colors brewing at the same time!

So, you know what I'll be doing-what's going on in your world?

Last year a friend of mine suggested that I try to offer a felting class at a local school, as she has done in past years. Unfortunately, when I contacted the director, their proposals were full, but she was interested, and told me to resubmit this year.

I did so.

And this morning, still feeling kinda crummy from a mild bout of food poisoning over the weekend, I opened my email to find the following:

Scotts Bluff Valley Fiber Arts Fair

Well, we've been home since Monday, but this has been my first opportunity to check in on the blog. Randy has offered to do a guest blog post to give an "unbiased" view of the event, but I wanted to drop a line or two in advance of that, along with a couple of the pictures.

I hope to make a return appearance next year, perhaps as an instructor. I loved the wonderful event coordinators who made us feel very welcome and at ease, and the customers and vendors were friendly...all in all, keep your eyes open for this to be an annual event in Scotts Bluff!

So, it's been awhile since I've posted, and while I could catch you up on EVERYTHING, instead I have decided to give you a glimpse of my creative process. Below, you'll find pictures I took as I prepared the fabric bases for new FELT-it accessories. The flowers began as fabric samples from a book, cut into very round egded pentagrams which were folded and put together, six to a flower, in an overlapping circle. To these I will add needle felted circles, and I will further embellish with decorative stitching and beading. I'll post more pics for the next steps as they occur.

In the meantime, enjoy the garden of delights!

I read this list on my friend's blog this afternoon (www.justjanak.blogspot.com) and had to steal it to share with you, all 3 of you! Thank you, Jana!

1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the heck are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection . . . again.

13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this -- ever.

15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Darn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste!

17. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

18. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

19. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than with Kay.

21. Sometimes, I'll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it.

22. I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

23. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I'm trying to finish a text.

24. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

25. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?

26. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

27. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, they just smell.

28. Is it just me or do high school kids lose some of their intelligence every year?

29. There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

30. As a driver I hate pedestrians, and as a pedestrian I hate drivers, but no matter what the mode of transportation, I always hate cyclists.

31. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

32. Even under ideal conditions, people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet my last dollar everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time!

33. Even when opportunity knocks, you still have to get off your rear end and open the door.

New Year, Fresh Start

2010 is here, and that means it is time for reflection on the past year, and visions for the coming year. And, while I may not be satisfied with what has occurred during the past year regarding my business pursuits, education improvements, etc., I choose to "give it a C- and move on", good advice from a therapist many years ago.

So, what do I know and what do I plan to do with the knowledge?

1. I am striving to be a better, more disciplined follower of Christ, and want to take every opportunity I can to continue to grow in my faith. I received two gifts this past year that will assist me in this pursuit: a weekly memory verse kit for the year from Samaritan's Purse and an Everyday Bible from my friend, Dawn. Both items are on my desk at my office, encouraging me to be a light to the students and teachers I encounter as a teacher's aid at our high school.

2. My family is growing up and I don't want to miss out, so my promise to them is to be a more involved, more interested mom, mother-in-law, and Granna. And, because my family includes friends, I will be more intentional about keeping in touch with and taking the time to build my friendships with my friends.

3. I discovered the medium that will be my focal point for all creative endeavors from this point forward: felting. And, I find that I cannot go a day without doing something creative, so I pledge to daily work on my creative pursuits. Sketching ideas, drafting patterns, writing tutorials, or creating beauty from fibers, fabrics, beads and paper-I'll do something each and every day.

So there you have it, my vision for the coming year. What about you? What are your visions for 2010?

according to Robert Gibbs, White House spokesman.

We spend $47,780 per year to keep 1 Kansas senator in the state legislature
in Topeka , according to Answer.com.

We spend $35,632 per year to keep 1 inmate in Kansas prisons, according to
PBS.

But, our some of our Kansas legislative leadership thinks that $4,100 is too
much money to spend per year to keep 1 Kansas school child educated.

Anyway...Clarke and I have this habit of greeting one another in the hallways with our full names: "Good morning, Clarke Green" "Good morning Anna Walker", and I throw the occasional Spanish phrase to him as he is doing his stairs routine (admittedly, very few Spanish phrases!) so, this morning, as we pass one another in the hallway, our standard greeting commence, but as I pass him, I hear him say "It's a hat!" Confused, I turn around and see Clark walking towards me, a big smile on his face, pointing to his spectacle covered eyes, as he says the following (or near enough for this post):

"I'm visually impaired...at first I thought you had done something to your hair, and I was thinking to myself, Oh My Gosh, what was she thinking! Then I realized that you were wearing a hat and I was greatly relieved!"

Needless to say, we both had a great laugh at the thought of my having cut my hair super short, and coloring is in shades of yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue and green!

Mr. Clarke Greene, thanks for the grins and giggles this morning!

Us girls working on wet felting techniques....first you start with fluffy fiber......then you wrap it in netting and a bamboo blind and roll, roll, roll, til you feel like your arms are bruised from wrist to elbow (or maybe they really ARE bruised from wrist to elbow)......then you open up the present and see how it turned out befor you hang it up to dry...My first two wet felted scarves, "blowing dry" in the Kansas breeze.

LOTS of wet felted scarves in the Kansas breeze. And below are some of the beautiful animals who "manufacture" some of this incredible fiber that I got to play with at the Harveyville Project's Felt School. I'm hoping to make this an annual workshop-and will be adding the dye lab next year!!

Migraine or not-BEING CREATIVE!

Over the past couple of months, I've noticed an increase in the number of migraines that attack me from time to time. Before, it would be one every 4 to 6 weeks or longer; these days, they seem to be attacking almost weekly. And, because I'm a penny pincher when it comes to meds, I've been looking for a way to stretch the imitrex rx, and I am hopeful that my strategy of monthly visits to the chiroprator in combination with monthly massage (anyone know of a good massage therapist that doesn't cost an arm and a leg in Topeka?) in addition to my current practice of taking a couple of acetominophen, turning off all lights, and closing my eyes for about 45 minutes when the visual distortions arrive...well, I'm hopeful they will do the trick.

The little kink in my tactics is that I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with a spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the opening in the vertebrae, in my cervical (neck) spine, and I've noticed an increase in the numbness that lead me to the dx in the first place. Are the migraines and the increased frequency related? Don't know. but if my chiropractor/massage/meds and my workouts on the WiiFit don't show any change by my next Dr. visit in November, I may be looking at a referral to a neurologist.

So...what does this have to do with being creative? Well, it means paying very close attention to any awkward positions when I am working on felting, or beading, or whatever else I am creating; it means taking frequent breaks to stretch and move; it means doing whatever I need to do, be it wearing double sunglasses indoors, ala Robert Stack in Airplane, or taking shut-eyes every now and then to relax my muscles, or finding better ways to do my art.

Because not creating is NOT an option. My muse is in high gear these days, and I'm hoping to launch some new items very, very soon, and I'm not letting anything, not even headaches from hell itself, keep me from being creative.

Take that, migraine, and get the heck out of here!

Ok, so some of you know that I've recently been bitten by yet another creative technique, needle felting. Well, I've started playing with wet felting in addition, and now I just want to know EVERYTHING I can know about felting. I went looking for the local spinning group, Spinsters, that I met at the Farmer's Market several weeks ago when I bought my first bag of assorted rovings to play with felting.

Well, four days before my last post, my first grandchild, Ezra John, was born. And, after a bit of a rocky start, including a couple of days in the NICU, he is growing and thriving and wonderful! Granna is just smitten with the little man, and can't wait to see him later this week. Here are a couple of pics:
The month of June was spent, for the second year in a row, in summer school, this year assisting the Biology instructor. Thankfully, I was able to hand off the Chemistry and Physics students to him because the Biology was enough to stretch the brain muscle in me! To complete the month of June and begin the month of July, I once again assisted with VBS at my church. This year I needed no real costume, as in previous years-just had to look comfortable in a swamp setting! Crocodile Dock was wonderful fun, and the kids learned how to shine their lights in their own neck of the woods, so to speak. The music was, hands down, some of the best VBS music I have had the pleasure and privilege of teaching the children.

Once I regained my energy (VBS was like a kick boxing workout every day!), I put myself to completing the two beading projects I had mulled over for a few months.

I am happy to have had the opportunity to once again participate in Beading for a Cure, an annual event where beaders are given an identical kit, allowed to add one additional type of bead, and create projects that will then be auctioned off to support the National Colorectal Cancer Research Association in the name of a beader, Layne Shilling, who lost her battle with the disease in 2002. Just a friendly reminder, it's that time of the year again. Please raise your big toes and repeat after me:

As a member of the Faux Paux Sisterhood, I pledge to follow The Rules when I wear sandals and other open-toe shoes:

I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. And the sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.

I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.

I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow. I will shave the hairs off my big toe.

I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend, coworker, mother, sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.

If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back in to place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it.

I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. Scholl's if my feet need him.

I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes at Payless for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kids' sizes. This is out of concern for my safety, and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat, and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.

I will take my toe ring off toward the end of the day if my toes swell and begin to look like Vienna sausages.

I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/coworker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her that her toes look like they've been dragged behind her car on the way to work and no sandal in the world is going to make her feet look good.

I will promise if I wear flip flops, that I will ensure they actually flip and flop, making the correct noise while walking and I will swear NOT to slide or drag my feet while wearing them.

I will promise to go to my local beauty school at least once per season and have a real pedicure (they are about $15 and worth EVERY penny). I say spend another $15.00 and get an even better one.

I will promise to throw away any white/off-white sandals that show signs of wear...nothing is tackier than dirty white sandals...

For all our sakes, please don't keep this to yourself - pass it on to other Sisters.

Beautiful Birthday...start to finish

I am blessed. There just isn't any other way to see it, I am blessed.

My morning began with a few precious moments with my hubby before heading to church to praise my Father God in the preschool area, watching the torrential rains from my vantage point of the check in desk. Afterwards, a quick lunch with my guys at home before heading back to church to prepare for, and enjoy the baby shower for my daughter-in-law, Dena. Much fun was had by all creating, somewhat hesitantly, but beautifully, a scrapbook and onsies for the soon to be grandbabe. I was touched by the friends who were able to share this time of celebration with Dena...ladies who have all touched my life in so many ways, especially my "sistah from anotha mistah", Regina.

I would not have made it through the past year without Regina-her love, her support, her kick in the backside have helped me to find my balance through some turbulent waters. She was, and will be again, I'm certain, my saving grace, an immeasurable gift from my Father God.

My day ended with a few hours with Randy, my beloved husband of these past 17 years. For me, there's nothing quite as romantic as squeezing his hand, tears rolling down both our cheeks, as we watch a moving story together on tv, look at one another as we pass the tissue box, drying our tears, and saying "I love you".

The thunderstorms were just the cherry on the whipped cream on the icing on the cake tonight.

To all my friends who have been with me on this journey of 49 years, I thank you. I would not be the woman I am today without each of you playing your part, for good or for bad. For my family, natural and chosen, I hope that I have been, and will be, the blessing that you have been to me.

I am blessed, and I thank you Father God for the blessings.

Beading for a Cure-Auction Time NOW!!

Last year, I had the great privilege of participating in a very special bead event: Layne's Legacy-Beading for a Cure. This is a bead challenge where the participants all begin with the same kit of materials, and create a work of art and beauty that is then auctioned off to raise funds for the National Colorectal Cancer Research Association in the memory of Layne Shilling, who lost her battle with the disease in 2002.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, and the auctions are just beginning now. I am especially glad to be able to participate as I had a close call three years ago when my doctor ordered a colonoscopy 10 years before the suggested age and precancerous polyps were found and removed. Because I had a doctor that followed his hunch, I dodged cancer, and will be checked more frequently to keep it that way.

The items created for this year are as varied as the artists who created them: jewelry, sculptures, bags, dolls, and much more. Take a look for yourself at the wonderful creations from this challenge:

ArtFire, I DID IT!!!

I've looked at this selling site for artisans for several months now, and finally made the jump to ArtFire today! And, though I only have one item listed today, by the end of the first week of March, I'll be featuring a NUMBER of new items!

For those of you who are not yet familiar with ArtFire, it is a site, much like etsy, where you can purchase handmade, artisan produced items, ranging from accessories to fine art. The best thing for sellers is that for a monthly fee, and NO OTHER FEES, you can list an unlimited number of items, with additional features available for marketing your work, etc. No listing fees, no commissions, just hte monthly fee. Right now, there are still a few accounts for "charter artisans" where you can sign up as a seller for $7 a month-and as long as you keep your account, you will be charged only that monthly charge for as many items as you want to put in your shoppe.

An EXTRA $1800+ from last year? I think not!!

WARNING-RANT!!!

Flex spending accounts for health care or child care expenses are nice: they allow you to pay for those regular, and often expensive, necessities with tax free monies. On the downside, you do have to submit claims and wait to be reimbursed, unless your provider has contracted with one of the very few companies that offers a debit card to directly access those funds and avoid the reimbursement process.

Ours does not.

So we submit our reimbursement claims manually, via fax, and get reimbursed from our account for the year. Unfortunately, this year, we switched administrators for the flex spend accounts, needed new forms, new phone numbers, new logins, etc. But still, submit claims, get reimbursed via direct deposit from the current year's contributions. Right?

NOT.

The new administrators have been paying our 2009 reimbursement claims from our 2008 account. But they didn't have a 2008 account for us. And we maxed out the 2008 account before the end of December last year. But twice now, their customer service people have said that we are in the "grace period" allowing us to access our 2008 funds still available (over $1800 according to them) for our 2009 requests.

You didn't miss me saying that we maxed out our account before the end of December, did you?

So now, armed with a print out of the entire 2008 activity from the former administrators, my husband is trying to get ahold of his benefits representative at the office (whole other rant here-most likely he will have to set an appointment for heaven-only-knows how long into the future) to discuss the problem we are having, to the tune of $1800+.

Hubby says, screw 'em, if they want to give us $1800+, then let them. Unfortunately, you and I know that eventually they will discover THEIR error, DEMAND THEIR money back, and say that we need to resubmit the claims to be properly processed from the 2009 funds. And, while like my friend Cathy, I HATE being the responsible one, it is necessary for a number of reasons:

1. It is the HONEST and RIGHT thing to do, even if the company doesn't want to see their error.

2. It is the ONLY thing to do, knowing that the error will eventually play out as I outlined above, and I truly HATE when I have to clean up someone else's mistakes. Kinda like when your kid says they feel like they are going to throw up: do you want them to tell you beforehand so that you have a chance to grab a trashcan, or do you want to wait to clean up the mess after they don't make it and there is vomit all over the floor?

3. Even though I'm irked at the situation, I'll be able to sleep soundly knowing that I've done all I can to correct the error.

I'll keep you posted-if the banks, and car manufacturers, and states have been running along the same principles as our new flex spend administrators, it's no wonder they are looking to be bailed out. To quote Dennis Miller: "Just my opinion, I could be wrong."

...but my son, Zack, blew me away this weekend with the song he wrote and performed at church on Sunday. I hope to have the words, or perhaps even the song itself, in an upcoming post.

Zack is my 'miracle child', born ten years after my first son, Nick, and following 4 miscarriages...I had given up the hope of another child when Randy and I were blessed with this boy on Easter Sunday in 1992. I recall the day well, especially the part when Randy's grandmother caught he and I timing contractions during lunch. Cordelia said, "Are you having pains?!?!" I replied yes, and she asked, "Shouldn't you be getting to the hospital?!?!". I told her no, not yet, that what I needed to do was to have another ham sandwich because I was going to need the energy!

About five hours later, after a little bit of a scare because of concern that he had aspirated meconium, this strong, feisty child was in my arms, and our adventure with him began.

Throughout the years, we have wondered about this passionate, stubborn, creative child...but when he first picked up the guitar, we knew that he had found his calling. Not unlike myself as a teen, Zack has carried his guitar with him no matter where he goes, the only times he has not have been when space considerations could not be excepted. He strolls the halls of the high school, playing his songs, music always at the ready. And, though it can drive us a little batty at times, hearing the same 8 bars of music over and over and over, hearing the result, as I did on Sunday, makes it all worthwhile. And I know that someday this bard, this troubadour, this musician, will make his mark on the music world, in one way or another. Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to present to you, Zack Walker.

...the grandbaby's first pictures!

All is well, baby and mama are healthy, and we are looking forward to counting down the last half of my daughter-in-law's pregnancy with great fun, festivities, and joy.

Here he/she is expected to arrive no later than June 3rd! (And no, they are not going to find out which is arriving-they want to be surprised, so don't ask them if they're going to find out. It makes Nick a little grumpy!)

I can't wait-and am getting a couple of old baby blankets ready for them (thanks Mom!), and will be working on some crafty fun for the baby shower I and the ladies of the church are going to have for Dena in late April early May.

Just call me Granna!

...it's been TOO long since I last posted!

Now that we have that out of the way, what shall I say? Hmmm...so many options...first week back at work/school since the break and it feels as if I've been back for a month...keeping the faith regarding finances, or lack thereof...having two teenage boys in the house makes me want to hide in my room NON STOP...Netflix is GREAT and Hubby and I are now hooked on Heroes (thanks for the membership kids-we love you!)...I need to finish taking down the Christmas decorations and organize them in a better way than previous years...my son is taking WAY TOO LONG to get the basement reorganized and I go CRAZY every time I have to check laundry...and I have so many creative ideas running around in my head that I'm about to burst-but the craft area is in flux-ARGH!

Ok, that about covers everything! How is life in your neck of the woods?

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride. We are ALL in danger of this condition, as it is very sneaky in getting ahold of our hearts. We are inundated by pride all day long: proud of our accomplishments, proud of our family, proud of our intelligence, our abilities...the list could go on forever. And, one could ask, what's wrong with being proud of who you are and where you came from? Doesn't that give us healthy self-esteem? Make it possible for us to strive for greater accomplishments and abilities? In fact, isn't it NECESSARY for us to have pride in order to function?

Well, yes....and no.

The problem is when we allow pride to be first-when we forget that it is not in ourselves we should put our trust, not in our abilities, our intelligence, our family, our heritage, but that our trust should be in God, first and always, for it is with and through Him that all of the rest is possible, and only through Him that we are blessed with our heritage, our families, our abilities, our accomplishments, our intelligence. When we take our eyes off of Him, and focus them on ourselves, we will tumble every time. Pride makes us focus on ourselves. And I want my eyes to be focused upwards, forward, looking to Him.

Proverbs 15: 1 A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

This is my downfall.

I have long struggled with being too direct, too intense, too quick to respond, and I have been shown the value of walking away, holding my tongue until I have calmed myself to be able to properly respond in love.

That doesn't mean that I am any less direct.

We are often called to confrontations, often called to say something that needs to be said, sometimes, even, to point out difficult realities. I believe that we are called to speak the truth, to be direct, to confront when it needs to be done. But the hardest part of our calling is to speak the truth IN LOVE.

So, while I am still direct, sometimes too direct, I have dialed down my intensity, dialed down my knee-jerk reactions, and begun to walk away in order to prayerfully consider my response to a situation. I have a long way to go-but I'm on the right path.

The verse that stood out to me today was, again, the first verse I read:

Proverbs 14: 1 A wise woman strengthens her family,
but a foolish woman destroys hers by what she does.

I must ask myself each day, is what I am doing strengthening my family? Am I keeping myself "plugged in" to the Creator each day? Am I staying grounded in Him? I am finding that only through that connection to God am I able to do what I need to do to keep my family strong...and I pray for the continued desire to do so every day.

Day One of Daily Quiet Time and Bible Study: Proverbs chapter 12

I have long struggled with myself in having and keeping a daily quiet time with God...always seem to find something else that needs attention, always too tired to get up early, always...finding an excuse to NOT do my quiet time instead of a reason TO DO my quiet time. Well, last night at Bible Study, I signed a commitment in front of my group saying that I would read and journal about what God showed me each day for the next thirty days. And, because I am trying to "KISS" (keep it simple stupid), I have decided that my first thirty days of reading will be based in Proverbs-it has 31 chapters, did ya know that?? One for every day of the month!!

So I logged onto Bible Gateway from my office computer and pulled up Proverbs 12-and God had me at verse one:

1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates correction is stupid.

Talk about the right passage to read on the right day! I am continually amazed at how God provides me with exactly what I need when I need it-and I am happy to say that He's got my attention, and my desire to continue Seeking Him (our Bible Study-WONDERFUL) every day from this day forward.

What did God say to me today? Love Discipline=Love Knowledge.

In the past two weeks, we have had the great fun of watching our youngest, Ian, play in his first middle school concerts. The first concert was in tandem with the high school jazz band, and, I have to tell you, the middle school kids really held their own! It was a lively, jazzy concert, and got us all in the mood for some great grooving.

The second concert was the fall 7th grade band concert, and the kids did GREAT! Ian was in his usual form, trying to dodge photo opportunity after photo opportunity, so the best I could do was sneak attacks from a distance. Here are the pics, though, and our band geek:
